About The Event

Hyper-presence by Vibin n Marblin Visual artist Chloe Cooper and vibraphonist Jackie Walduck (aka Vibin n Marblin) bring their audio-visual improvisations to spark fresh associations between the senses. From immersive video projections and mesmeric vibraphone soundscapes, to their unique multisensory performance Miso Kitchen, audiences are invited into their cross-sensory world where colour and sound draw out alternative experiences of taste, smell and touch. As we reset after the Pandemic, the slow, measured performance of Miso Kitchen echoes ancient tea ceremonies, and a conviviality associated across the world with food. Japanese paper marbling (known as suminagashi) is presented live in dialogue with specially created music. Chloe and Jackie watch and listen to one another, adapting their sounds and visuals in real time. They invite the audience to reflect on their own cross-sensory experience of eating miso soup whilst immersed in the swirling sights and sounds. How might colour and sound alter the taste, smell and texture of miso soup? Communion is a newly developed piece inspired by the ecclesiastical architecture of The Hot Tin and the digitally-mediated nature of Miso Kitchen. Using projection-mapping software to contextualise the marbled visuals and live looping to moderate the sound, the artists investigate the role of the senses in dematerialised life taking place in digitised spheres. Could a digitally-mediated audiovisual world allow us to engage with our senses in ways that enable us to become more present than in our physical world? Could we achieve a kind of hyper-presence?
